A team of Polish scientists makes important discoveries in the battle with the Coronavirus
The success of Polish scientists. Research on COVID-19 has been recognized as groundbreaking
Research indicating the genetic background of the severe course of COVID-19, co-authored by Dr. Paweł Zawadzki from MNM Diagnostics and the Polish Biobanking Center, was among the most groundbreaking discoveries in 2020 in the world. Ten papers of key importance for science and humanity identified the prestigious journal “Nature”.
Dr. Paweł Zawadzki, assistant professor at the University of Poznań and co-founder of MNM Diagnostics and the Polish BioBanking Center, co-created groundbreaking studies together with scientists from Rockeffeller University in New York.

Research indicates, among others IFN-I deficiencies lead to uncontrolled replication and spread of the virus that causes COVID-19 and may have additional consequences for immune function. Thus, individuals with genetic alterations in the IFN-I induction pathway would benefit from interferon-based therapy.🔬
– We analyzed the genetic material from people suffering from COVID-19 very hard and it turned out that among this group, some of the respondents have very specific genetic variants that are practically unheard of in people who have had a slight history of SARS CoV-2 infection – explains Dr. Paweł Zawadzki . – It seems that we have candidates for genetic variants that determine the severe course of COVID-19 – he adds. 🧑🎓🔬
In addition to the works of Paweł Zawadzki and scientists from the United States, “Nature”, the oldest and most prestigious journal in the world of science, distinguished this year with studies on, among others, reconstruction of the ozone hole, treatment of HIV infection or increasing the resolution of cryoelectron microscopy.
Dr. Paweł Zawadzki reminds that MNM Diagnostics is constantly implementing the project “Resistant to COVID”. – We are currently looking for “superheroes” resistant to COVID and we are looking for a gene that gives people immunity to infection. Everything indicates that from 1 to 5 percent. surprisingly, our population is not infected with SARS-CoV-2. We want to understand why some people are immune, if there is a genetic factor that protects them. If we manage to establish it, it may turn out to be another groundbreaking discovery – summarizes Paweł Zawadzki.
