Jan-Krzysztof Duda surprises champion
In his seventh meeting, Jan-Krzysztof Duda defeated Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, considered the best player in the world, at the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge.
Duda was doing much better on the second day of the competition. The Pole started the day by defeating Daniel Dubov, but then lost to Alireza Firouzja. In the third duel he was to face Magnus Carlsen, considered the best chess player in the world. – Watching his game is always interesting, because he always plays for victory, never for a draw – said the Norwegian about the Pole’s game. 😎♟
Their duel ended unexpectedly. The Pole, playing very aggressively, defeated Carlsen, scoring his third point in the tournament. However, this did not change his position in the classifications – he remained in 10th position. He had one more duel left until the end of the day.
The competition in the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge takes place in two phases. Chess players first compete in the peer-to-peer phase, playing 15 minutes plus 10 seconds for each move made. In the second phase, the best eight competitors will compete in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. The tournament will end on June 3.
Jan-Krzysztof Duda defeated Magnus Carlsen for the first time in his career – the Norwegian has been the world champion since 2013, and has not lost for 111 games, thus setting a world record. However, we are talking about classic chess; The Polish-Norwegian match was in instant chess. In 2018, Carlsen had become world champion, ahead of Duda by just 0.5 points. Maybe there will be a changing of the guard? 🏆
